Fall Wardrobe Refresh: Timeless Pieces for Effortless Style
It's almost that time of year again for your fall pieces to make a comeback!. So, unpack your fall items and lets make sure you have the perfect wardrobe for this season!
If you are anything like me, you might take a look at your closet full of clothes and think, "I have absolutely nothing to wear," or "I need a whole new wardrobe!" But, before we rush out to spend a bunch of money on new clothes that will be out of style in a year... let me help build you the perfect closet now that will stand the test of time.
Lets take this one step at a time!
Step One: Closet Cleanout
We're going through everything in that closet of yours. Yes, everything. It will be worth it, I promise!
Here are the rules:
1. If you didn't wear it last season, odds are you won't wear it this season either. So, here are your options: either plan exactly when and where you are going to wear it, or style it right now in an outfit you're sure you'll wear. Can't do either of those things? Then, its time to find it a new home.
2. You need to try on everything. I know that sounds horrible, trust me. But, you might either fall in love with a piece that you forgot you had, or realize something doesn't fit the way you imagined. (Friendly Reminder: clothing is made to fit YOU; you are NOT made to fit the clothing)
3. Everything is better with friends! Grab your girls, a bottle of wine, and make a night out of it - it's time for your fashion show! Plus, trading clothes is always fun (BONUS: your clothes are staying in the family!)
Don't get too overwhelmed; it's okay if this takes a few days! Start with one category at a time. You got this!
Instead of throwing away those pieces you no longer wear, please consider donating them to local thrift stores to give your clothes a second life and support great causes! Here are a few options in Boise:
- Idaho Youth Ranch Thrift Store - Multiple locations throughout Boise. Your donations help fund programs for local youth!
- Desert Industries - 10740 Fairview Ave, Boise. A great spot to donate while supporting job training programs!
- Goodwill Boise - 1465 S Vinnell Way, Boise. Proceeds from donated clothes help fund local community programs.
- St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store - 6464 W State St, Boise. Your donations support social services for those in need!
Not only will you be decluttering your closet, but you'll also be making a positive impact on our community!
Step Two: Finding Your Staples
Now that you've cleared out the clutter, it's time to focus on the essentials. Fall is all about layering and mixing textures, so you'll want to make sure you have a few key pieces that will serve as the backbone of your wardrobe. These staples will not only make picking out an outfit easier but will also keep your style timeless.
Here's what you should be looking for (if you don't already have it in your closet)
1. A Great Pair of Jeans: Whether you prefer skinny, straight-leg, or wide-leg, a solid pair of well-fitting jeans is a must-have. Stick to classic washes like dark denim or black, as they pair effortlessly with just about anything.
2. Chunky Knits: You can never go wrong with cozy, oversized sweaters. Neutral colors like beige, grey and black are versatile, but never be afraid to add a pop of fall colors like rust, olive, or mustard.
3. Layering Basics: Stock up on high-quality basics like long-sleeve and short-sleeve tees, turtlenecks, and tank tops. These pieces are perfect for layering under anything and will create dimension and warmth in your outfits. I promise a good quality basic will never do you wrong.
4. A Timeless Coat: Whether it's a tailored wool coat or a trendy trench, having a good coat will pull together any outfit. Opt for neutral colors to maximize versatility, but don't shy away from plaid or houndstooth patterns if that's more your style!
5. The Perfect Boots: Fall isn't complete without a solid pair of boots. Whether you prefer a tall boot, ankle boot, or a boot with a heel, make sure they are versatile and comfortable. A classic leather or suede option in black or brown will go with almost any outfit.
(P.S. Don't forget to have a snow-safe boot on hand for when the weather turns icy)
6. Accessories: Accessories are the easiest way to elevate a look. A chunky scarf, statement earrings, or a hat can take a simple outfit to the next level without much effort at all.
Step Three: Fill in the Gaps
Now that you have your staples, it's time to assess where you might need to fill in some gaps. Did your favorite pair of jeans not survive last season? Maybe your knit sweaters are looking a bit worn? Make a list of what you are missing, and be mindful of investing in quality pieces that will last. The goal is to build a wardrobe that will serve you season after season, not just for a fleeting trend.
Remember, fashion is meant to be fun and expressive. By curating a closet full of pieces you love, getting dressed everyday will feel less and less like a chore and more like an opportunity to show off your style. Here's to a stylish and timeless fall :)
